Williams Wharf, an historic boatyard and steamship landing provides public access to Mathews’ picturesque East River for engineless watercraft (canoes, kayaks, rowing shells). Recent restoration of the wharf area added waterfront green space, floating docks, fishing area, support building with restrooms, an exhibition building for events or water-oriented classes and activities, a small floating stage and outdoor seating, and small-craft handling center. William Wharf Landing is also proud to be home to the National Champion Mathews High School Crew Team.

PARKING: Parking is approximately one-half mile offsite in an open field (often muddy), and a shuttle bus shuttle is usually provided that runs the rowers and parents into the regatta area. $5 parking fee is charged. No dogs allowed! The road to the parking lot is paved, the actual parking lot is not. No seating is available…bring chairs. Large bulky items (such as large coolers) are allowed, but can be inconvenient due to distance from parking lot.

WEATHER: Because of the location, weather can be unpredictable and colder than one might expect…do not judge the weather based on what it is in Chesapeake. Blankets and layered clothing are advised. Bathroom facilities are the temporary kind and can be short of supplies. Better to bring your own.

FOOD & VIEWING: Limited food choices are available…they are famous for crab cake sandwiches. All food profit goes toward maintaining the wharf. Viewing rails along the wharf are excellent locations for taking pictures. Mathews usually has race T-shirts for sale.
